State of Decay 2: Zombie Apocalypse Guide

Tutorial

We all know that some of us prefer to skip tutorials in games, but in this one, it’s highly recommended not to. The moment you step into the Zombie Apocalypse, you’ll be thrown into a world of chaos, and without some guidance, you’ll be lost. Trust me, as you read further in this guide, you’ll understand why the tutorial is crucial, even if we cover some of it here.

During the tutorial, the game will give you a grasp of its mechanics. You’ll learn about things like Blood Plague, the various types of zombies (yes, there’s more than one), and a few other essentials. We’ll leave out some details to prevent spoilers, in case you enjoy the element of surprise. This game does have a storyline, after all.

Basic Gameplay

To survive, you’re part of a group striving to rebuild humanity, known as a “Community.” Your task is to scavenge for resources, fend off zombies, and form alliances with other groups called “Enclaves.” However, the most significant part of your mission is to destroy Plague Hearts.

About Death

Here are some crucial points to remember about death in this game, and why avoiding it is paramount:

  1. When your HP drops to zero, you enter a state similar to bleeding out. But here, your Max HP continuously decreases with each passing second. You can recover on your own or with the help of a Follower.
  2. If your HP hits zero again, you’re permanently dead. The character you were controlling is gone. Avoid this at all costs! Dying can seriously impact your Community’s Morale, especially on higher difficulty levels.
  3. After dying, you can switch to another character in your community.
  4. The map shows where the deceased survivor perished, and you can collect their loot.
  5. To avoid deaths, stay away from Juggernauts. They’re the toughest zombies you’ll encounter. Never face them alone, especially on Dread difficulty or higher. Always bring a Follower or invite another player to help you.
  6. Remember that all survivors have Health Bars, even if you’re not controlling them. They can take damage in combat, and you can’t heal them without switching to them.

About Enclaves

Enclaves are groups similar to your community, though they’re usually smaller, often with five or fewer members. It’s best to build positive relationships with them. Avoid making them hostile; otherwise, you might have to fight them. Being Friendly or Allies with them reduces prices for purchases and recruitment costs. If they become Allies, recruiting them costs nothing. Completing missions involving certain Enclaves improves your relationship with them. Ignoring or refusing missions can lead to neutral or hostile relations, so it’s wise to maintain their goodwill when possible. You’ve got enough enemies in this world, and hostile humans are quite formidable in combat.

Warning: Humans are smarter when it comes to combat, so avoid making them your foes. If you can’t avoid it, be well-armed for the fight.

About Blood Plague Zombies

Exercise caution around these zombies, as they pose multiple threats:

  1. Blood Plague Zombies are distinguishable by their red appearance and glowing red eyes.
  2. They fight similarly to regular zombies, with the primary difference being their appearance.
  3. If a Blood Plague Zombie hits you, your Blood Plague Meter increases, shown as a white bar above your Minimap. Don’t worry; this doesn’t mean you’re infected.
  4. If the Blood Plague bar fills, it starts blinking red, and you have a countdown to your demise. If this happens, leave the battle immediately. Once back at your base, place your survivor in the Infirmary to halt the progress of Blood Plague. Note that this consumes your Medical supplies as a Daily Upkeep until the survivor is cured. You’ll also need Blood Plague Samples to make the cure, with the required amount depending on your chosen difficulty level.
  5. One last piece of advice, Juggernauts are immune to Blood Plague. They’re already formidable enough with their size and strength.
