How to Defeat Nere and the Duergar in BG3

Alright, here’s a clearer and more player-friendly version of the game guide you provided:

Nere is quick to show his nasty side, and your decisions and preparations will shape the upcoming battle. If you’re playing as a paladin and choose to stand up for the slaves without aligning with Elder Brithvar, you might face these adversaries:

Enemies when Defending the Gnomes Against Nere without Aligning with Elder Brithvar:

  • Nere
  • Sergeant Thrinn
  • Elder Brithvar
  • Stone Guard Kur
  • Mind Master Dunnol
  • Mind Master Fonmara
  • Drar
  • Thudd
  • Corsair Greymon
  • Dalthar
  • Scrying Eye
  • Danna
After teaming up to overcome Nere, you have the chance to engage in dialogue and utilize certain checks to persuade Elder Brithvar to release his slaves.
Alternatively, you can leverage the situation to either push for the liberation of the slaves or use it as a pretext to eliminate the remaining duergar. With Nere and his loyal group vanquished, you have an opening to make this choice.
Once you set the slaves free, take the opportunity to converse with them. They’ll reveal information about their captured leader and the perilous secret he holds.

This situation isn’t great, even with buffs and preparation. Secure higher ground and target spellcasters like Corsair Greymon and Nere. Avoid the lava – duergar might shove you in, and you shouldn’t hesitate to do the same to them. While each duergar isn’t overwhelming, their combined attacks can add up, particularly if Nere or Corsair Greymon debuffs your team. If the Scrying Eye survives, it could call for backup like the one at the Shattered Sanctum, making things worse. To win, use potions and scrolls to boost your abilities. Luck with Saving Throws and Concentration checks will also matter.

But that’s the worst-case scenario. More likely, you’ll face fewer enemies due to different choices. For instance, Nere may turn hostile and target Sergeant Thrinn if you intervene to save the gnomes. If you make a deal with Elder Brithvar, Nere might instruct you to eliminate the duergar. In this case, the enemies could be:

Enemies if You Let Nere Kill the Gnomes and Agree to Eliminate the Duergar:

  • Elder Brithvar
  • Stone Guard Kur
  • Mind Master Dunnol
  • Mind Master Fonmara
  • Drar
  • Thudd
  • Corsair Greymon
  • Dalthar
  • Scrying Eye
  • Danna

By working with Elder Brithvar, the fight can go better. If you align with him, Nere becomes an ally, and your enemies could be:

Enemies if You Side with Elder Brithvar and Confront Nere:

  • Nere
  • Sergeant Thrinn (if you support the gnomes)
  • Mind Master Dunnol
  • Mind Master Fonmara
  • Drar
  • Corsair Greymon
  • Dalthar
  • Scrying Eye (if you haven’t defeated it)
  • Danna

Here, the odds are more balanced. Remember, Danna might not be present, and you might have taken out the Scrying Eye. You’ll have a six-on-seven advantage, so high ground and buffs are key. Afterward, Elder Brithvar rewards you with 500 gold, and you can loot the bodies. You can even intimidate Elder Brithvar to free the gnomes or challenge him for more rewards.

If you align with Nere, he’ll instruct you to report on his failings at Moonrise Tower. You’ll receive a Gift from the Absolute, enhancing your abilities over time. Alternatively, by challenging Nere and the Absolute, you can gain the upper hand, though it’s tougher than siding with Elder Brithvar. Convincing Nere that the Absolute is a front for Mind Flayers will earn you a Dagger +1, a less impressive reward.

Remember, the choice you make shapes the fight and its outcome. Best of luck!

Should you choose to align with Nere, once the clash is done, he’ll direct you to Moonrise to cover for his shortcomings.
Additionally, as part of your alliance with Nere, he’ll grant you a Gift from the Absolute. This unique boon will work to amplify your psionic abilities over time.
